THE BULGARIAN MEDICAL UNION was established in 1901 and is the second professional organization of physicians in the world, after the English one. The organization’s initial task was to protect the interests of the medical profession and determine their fees. The first chairman of the BLS was Dr. Dimitar Mollov. In 1947, the professional organization was merged by the government with the Medical Workers’ Union.

Shortly after the democratic changes in 1989, the gradual unification of the guild began, with 28 independent regional societies being established. On January 13, 1990, the BLS was restored, and Prof. Dr. Ivan Kirov was the first elected leader at the 27th Restoration Assembly. Today, over 32 thousand physicians are members of the BLS. The Bulgarian Medical Union continues to defend the interests of the profession, which are also the interests of the entire society.
