Hospital “St. Catherine ”will be named Prof. Dr. Alexander Chirkov
The management of the Ministry of Health decided by the University Hospital “St. Ekaterina "to be renamed in the name of Prof. Dr. Alexander Chirkov, the agency reported.
The proposal was received by an initiative committee, which includes patients, students, colleagues and followers of Prof. Chirkov, and is also supported by the BMA.
We recall that at the end of 2020, days after the profit of Prof. Alexander Chirkov left, the professional organization addressed the mayor of the capital, Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova and demanded his name to carry an object in Sofia (street, boulevard, hospital, hospital ), thus paying the deserved respect to Prof. Chirkov's memory.
At the end of June, the Sofia City Council decided to name a garden near the medical establishment on the famous cardigurge, and a month later came the decision of the Ministry of Health.
Thus, an exceptional doctor, man and actor, one of the colossus and innovators in medicine, will receive once again the necessary recognition for his dedication and distinguished achievements.
Prof. Alexander Chirkov was born in Lom on January 27, 1938. He graduated from the Higher Medical Institute in Sofia in 1962.
He left in 1966 to West Berlin, where he specialized in the famous cardiac surgeon Prof. Bookler. He remained there as a doctor at the University Hospital, then transferred to West Germany - to the University of Frankfurt of Main and to the University of Freiburg, where he has been a professor since 1981.
In 1984 he returned to Bulgaria, invited by Acad. Atanas Maleev, Rector of the Medical Academy and Deputy Minister of Health.
He performed the first cardiac transplant in Bulgaria and in the Balkans in 1986. He has been the director of St. Catherine Hospital for many years.
Prof. Chirkov has gained worldwide popularity and appreciation for his professionalism in the field of heart disease, surgery, transplants.
